I have been a financial advisor for over twenty years. I now find myself part of the year in charge of a team in beautiful Moscow. In the main the rest of my time is spent in beautiful Rome. Moscow is still very new to me Meeting with new prospective clients on a day to day basis, as I go out on appointments with the advisors. Talking to the expat community, it shocks me to hear the so called advice that they are given, by so called financial advisors, working for very large organisations. What makes me angry is that on occasions I get viewed in the same light.

I was trained as an accountant back in the seventies, and I am Chartered Insurance Institute accredited. First let me enlighten you with the basics:

All expats need specialist financial advice… You are not in your home country, your circumstances have changed, and you need to take advice.

You may think you can sort things out yourself, but believe me when I say you cannot; do this yourself…it’s a bit like adding an additional electrical socket in your home…. looks easy enough, but without the ability to rewire a house from scratch, it is not. This is why the law has been changed.

You will be clueless as to how you are affected… it’s a bit like walking around with a heart defect you did not know you had… you need help but you do not know it yet.

You need to speak to an advisor not a salesman… Sorry but you need to be able to work this one out for yourself.

This brings me on to the purpose of this article. I for my part have spent the last twenty years or so, repairing the damage created by so called financial advisors. It also saddens me that after seeing the abuse of clients trust, by so called offshore financial advisors for over ten years, very little has been done to protect the expat community.

I for one would like to see regulation brought in. As with everything if enough of us stand up to be counted, we can make a difference. However as with all institutions were billions of Pounds, Dollars, Euros, are to be made, there is also corruption at the highest level.

As long as I do not mention any names, this will keep me out of the courts. Some of you reading this article will be able to guess who I am by the tone, so to protect my company from court action I must mention that the views expressed here are my personal ones, and not necessarily that held by my company.

Within the coming months it is my intention to create a sight where unhappy angry clients of brokerages can air their views, and get help to redress problems caused by bad advice.
