Understand French Money

26 Jan 2010

The French people used to have the French franc as their currency. However, now they use Euro and most all the other European countries have also started using Euro as their currency. Euro was introduced in 1999 and the bank notes and coins came in regular circulation from 2002.

American currency is not accepted in the European countries except for a few hotels and stores at decided exchange rates. The life in other parts of France except for Paris is comparatively inexpensive.

If you go to a restaurant in France, you get the bill including service charge which is 15%of the amount and tax. However, if you really like the food and service, giving two to three percent extra is appreciated. It is a common practice in France to leave tips for bus drivers, washroom attendants, hotel porters and tour conductor. It is up to you how much tip to leave.

If you want to exchange your currency to Euro in France, you can go to major banks or post office for money conversion. Few big stores, airports also offer money conversion facility. Exchange rate is same everywhere in France; however, the agent’s commission varies from agent to agent.

Master Card and Visa are widely accepted through out European Countries. The shops and restaurants levy a minimum charge when you use your credit card for availing different services.

If you are carrying US travelers’ checks, then it is advised that you exchange it at banks or exchange offices as the travelers checks may not be accepted in many shops and restaurants.
