California College Funding - Arnold Says No
It seems the famous “Terminator” in the movies is now becoming the not so famous (governor) “Terminator” for grants at California’s major Universities. The California tuition funding program for all the students is cited for some major cut backs by the now governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. Schwarzenegger got his fame by being in the movies playing the role of the “Terminator” and his famous line “I’ll Be Back” meaning that he would be there to save the heroine is pulling no favors with the Universities and students who are not receiving the much needed funds from the state. The students who rely on the California student funding program claim that for some of them it will be impossible to complete their degree if they are denied the much needed funds. What is the now “Terminator” governor thinking a question asked by many officials at the University. One of the most significant changes would be not providing the money for the increase in tuition for those who are already in the middle of their education program. The governor plans on abandoning the students in mid course causing panic and upheaval of the whole grant system. The University of California and California State University are gearing up for the 10% rate hike in student tuitions. In the year 2000 the California legislation had guaranteed middle and low income students who meet certain financial and academic benchmarks nearly full offsets of their fees, which have escalated sharply in recent years. The governor’s $87.5 million in proposed reductions is about 10% of what the Cal colleges need to help those low to middle income students remain in school. The governor claims he realizes how difficult this is going to be on many people but since legislation refused to pass the needed comprehensive solution to the funding programs the state is simply running out of money. It is much better to make budget cuts than to start borrowing from the federal government. This is the opinion expressed by Schwarzenegger said his spokeswoman and in his own words he claims that “he understands how difficult these cuts will be” but he is responsible for leading the state through the economic crisis and he must do what is best for the state as a whole. The rationale behind the governor’s cuts makes sense to the legislation; however, the students are still left without any help in completing their course of studies earning that final degree.
